Frantz Joseph Could be a Middle Round Pick
Some of the smaller colleges (and a few big ones) have already finished their pro days. So far, as expected, quite a few guys have performed much better in the comfort of their own backyards than they did in Indianapolis. Here’s a list of the biggest names to work out as of March 6th.
Ball St — OT Robert Brewster and QB Nate Davis, both of whom worked out at the Combine, sat out of Ball St’s pro day. They will work out for scouts again on March 20th. TE Darius Hill impressed scouts measuring at 6-07 246. His VERT was 31, BROAD was 9-06, and he ran the 40 in 4.74 and4.75. Those times would have been among the fastest for tight ends in Indy.
Baylor — OT Jason Smith participated in position drills but decided to stick with his individual measurables from the Combine. Fellow OT Dan Gay participated in all of the drills, but he was unimpressive to say the least. The St Louis Rams will be back March 12th for a private workout with Smith. Big surprise.
Florida Atlantic — LB Frantz Joseph had a nice workout during the Owls pro day. He measured in at 6-01 242 and ran consecutive 40 times of 4.85. His VERT was 27.5, his BROAD was 9-07.5, he ran the 20 yard shuttle in 4.41, the three cone drill in 7.34, and he managed 19 reps on the bench.
Miami — CB Bruce Johnson was again more impressive in Miami than he was in Indy. He measured in at 5-09.75 167. He also posted some great 40 times of 4.42 and 4.45. His VERT was 38.5, his BROAD was 10-4, his 20 yard shuttle was 4.03 and his three cone was 6.92. He didn’t do the bench press.
Missouri — The Missouri offensive stars will work out on March 19th, but the defensive players fared pretty well. Headlining the event was S William Moore. He measured in at 6-00.5 and 221 pouds and ran the 40 in 4.49 and 4.51 seconds. He looked fluid in position drills and ended up with a 6.94 three cone drill and a 10-6 broad jump. DT Evander Hood, who some have going in the first round, posted a 4.45 short shuttle and a 7.32 cone drill. He also had a 34.5 inch VERT and a 9-08 BROAD. Most impressive, however was his 35 rep outing on the bench. Hood kept his combine 40. DE Stryker Sulak decided to keep all of his combine measurables.
Texas A&M — QB Stephen McGee looked awesome in position drills that were run by Jacksonville Jaguars QB coach Mike Shula. He measured in at 6-02.9 222. He will probably be the 4th-6th QB taken. RB Mike Goodson had a strong showing as well. He ran the 40 in 4.43 and 4.47. DE Michael Bennett ran two 4.86 40s. He also had a 36.5 inch VERT.
Troy — CB Sherrod Martin, who is making the switch from safety to corner, was excellent in position drill and showed the hip fluidity to be a successful NFL corner. He posted 40 times of 4.46 and 4.49 seconds to go along with a 36.5 VERT.
W Illinois — LB Jason Williams ran extremely well. He posted 40 times of 4.42 and 4.48 seconds. He had a 39 inch VERT and a 10-9 BROAD. His shuttle times were subpar, but the fact that he worked out on a slippery basketball floor probably had something to do with that.
Wisconsin — RB PJ Hill measured in at 218 pounds, which is the lightest he’s been since junior high. It didn’t help much in the 40 however, as he ran a 4.65 and a 4.63. His other measurables were pretty decent though: 37 VERT, 4.24 20 yard shuttle, 7.09 three cone, 16 bench reps, and a 10-2 BROAD. TE Travis Beckum measured 6-02.8 239. He ran a 4.61 and 4.63. His BROAD was a 9-10, 38.5 VERT, 4.10 20 yard shuttle, and a 7.05 three cone. DE Matt Shaughnessy ran a 4.86, but did not participate in anything else. LBs Deandre Levy and Jonathan Casillas did not participate at all, and will work out on April 2nd. OT Eric Vandenheuvel has decided to enter medical school insted of the draft.
