What the Experts Said Last Year

Yeah Brian Johnson and the Utes pulled off some major upsets last year, but which major preview mag knew what would really happen? Here's a hint. I won.

Just a little look back at who picked what last year.  I’ve gone and gotten out my old 2008 preview mags from some of the best around.

Phil Steele is my favorite preview artist, and there’s no doubt he’s usually the most accurate.  He’s got a better read on the Heisman than anyone else around, and he’s not too far off on the other awards either.  The Sporting News has great info, great stats, and keeps me interested with their in-depth depth charts.  And Athlon is usually the gutsiest preview mag in the country.  Sure, they’re not always right, but hey no one is.  Plus I like reading the Athlon Awards.

So anyway, I’ve gone back and revealed who picked who in ten important categories.

TSN PS ATH DZ
National Champ Georgia Florida Florida Florida
ACC Clemson FSU Clemson Clemson
Big East WVU WVU WVU WVU
Big Ten OSU OSU OSU Penn State
Big 12 Oklahoma Oklahoma Oklahoma Oklahoma
Pac 10 USC USC USC USC
SEC Georgia Florida Florida Florida
Heisman Tebow Tebow Tebow Tebow
BCS Runner Up OSU OSU OSU Oklahoma
BCS Buster BYU Utah BYU BYU

Here’s the final tally.

1.)  Draft Zoo (DZ) — Woohoo!  I win.  And this is legit, I promise.  Seriously I felt like I did a pretty good job previewing the college football scene last year, and it looks like I did.  I had the easy ones pegged like UF for the national title and USC to win the Pac 10.  What really set me apart was my pick of Penn State to win the Big Ten.  That, and knowing that Oklahoma would end up as the second best team in the country.  It’s all about the quarterback, the offensive line, and the pass rush.  But more on that later.  Final tally:  6/10

2.)  Phil Steele (PS) — Not surprised at all by this.  Phil is usually spot on, and of course he was the only one that knew that Utah would win the MWC and break into the BCS.  That’s a hell of a call considering the talent BYU was returning.  Final tally:  5/10

3.)  Athlon (ATH) — Surprise third place here.  Athlon went out on a limb with a few picks, but I feel like it paid off for them.  Final tally:  4/10

4.)  The Sporting News (TSN) — Tough year for Sporting News.  I blame it on the merge with Streets and Smiths.  Still, I’ll keep buying this mag every year.  It’s still got loads of info, and even with the new S&S slant, it’s still a great one.  Final tally: 2/10
