2010 NFL Draft Tim Tebow FULL SCOUTING REPORT

by Hunter Ansley on Apr 21, 2010, 12:44 PM

Can't be a coincidence that those new Florida unis resemble the old school Bills' rags... right?

In case you live in a hole, or don’t read this website but let’s be honest it’s more likely that live in a hole, I’ve been pretty high on Tim Tebow’s NFL prospects for quite some time.  He’s the No. 1 overall guy on my draft board. He’s even in the first round of my FINAL MOCK DRAFT; not so in Mike’s FULLY COMMENTED 7 ROUNDER. But even with the scouting report we posted, and the constant barrage of pro-Tebow articles, many are still not convinced.

So, if there’s anyone left out there who can stomach it, I’m releasing my full Tim Tebow scouting report for all to see what exactly it is that I see in Tim Tebow when watching him live, on film, in person, or at the combine.  Here it is, the full Monty.  As always, don’t forget to send questions, comments or hate mail to me, at DraftZoo@gmail.com.

Okay, here’s the Tebow report.

Tim Tebow — University of Florida — Sr. #15 (LH) DOB: 8/14/87

Tapes: Florida State, Cincinnati, LSU, Georgia, Alabama, Alabama (2008), Oklahoma (2008)

Career Stats

Yards per Attempt: 9.2
Passing Yards: 9285
Passing TDs: 88
Interceptions: 16
Passer Rating: 170.8 (2nd all-time)
Completion Percentage: 66.4
Rushing TDs: 57

Height/Weight/Speed: 6026/236/4.71

Quickness/Agility/Balance: Well above average.  Showed at combine with excellent results in testing.  Was near or at top of QBs for nearly every drill.  Elite athlete.

Insincts/Intelligence: Proven with pro day.  Made HUGE strides in very little time.  Shows that he has the intelligence to improve on his above average instincts.  High Football IQ, and can/will devour a playbook from the mental side.  Decision to change motion was smart.  Rarely made the wrong decision.

Strength/Explosion: Very strong with excellent explosion.  Strong upper body and very strong lower body.  Bull rusher in college who thrived on contact.  Will need to change, but explosiveness is there.  Can run you over.

Body Flexibility: Fluid athlete who can move as needed, and was very underrated at making people miss.  Elusive player with enough wiggle to buy extra time.  Does not show stiffness, and absorbs contact very well.

Durability: Extremely durable in college despite taking a lot of hits.  Only suffered one real injury (concussion–senior year–missed part of one game) but has suffered no lasting effects.  Is not an injury risk as long as he drops the power running so often.  May have issues with wear on body.

Character: Not a question.  Highest character player I’ve ever graded.  Incredible discipline, work ethic, leadership, courage, and heart.  Will be a positive force in the locker room and an undeniable weapon on the field.  Can get into that “refuse to lose” mode.

Production: Elite production at the highest level in college.  Played against superb competition in SEC and bowl games, and put up video game stats.  Heisman winner.  Very good TD:INT ratio, completion percentage, and yards per attempt (9.5).  Broke numerous school, conference, and national records through air and on ground.

Drop Quickness/Balance: Needs improvement.  Played out of shotgun primarily in college.  Shows great potential and improved from Senior Bowl to pro day by leaps and bounds, but still not all the way there.  Needs practice with timing of drops.  Showed great improvement in steps and balance at pro day.

Set Up Quickness/Positioning: Similar to drop quickness.  Needs improvement.  Made great strides in short period of time (5 weeks) before pro day, but still has tendency to ease into set up.  Much quicker last week.  Showed high improvement in positioning.  Ball has always come out high enough, now it never drops.

Release Quickness: Showed massive improvement at pro day.  Release was tighter, more compact and infinitely quicker.  Lost no accuracy or arm strength from change.  No longer loops ball down like a pitcher.  Resembles more of a Phillip Rivers style now.

Accuracy: Very underrated quality.  Always had completion percentage in mid-60 range.  Shows nice touch and accuracy on deep ball.  Can pinpoint on slants, digs, outs.  Leads receivers and follows through.  With better footwork he’s shown lately, this will only get better.  Ball sometimes wobbles off of hand.  Watch Sugar Bowl tape and it’s an A+.

Judgment/Decision Making: Will be tested.  Played in a zone read spread offense and ran a lot.  Showed incredible decision making skills with 88:16 TD:INT ratio.  Does not turn the ball over often.  Protects ball and isn’t afraid to tuck it and run or throw on the run.  Improvises very well.

Field Vision: Will need work in this area.  Hard to doubt his TD:INT numbers and completion percentage, but he hasn’t been asked to make reads in an NFL offense.  Used a lot of play action and run threats in college, must show that he can stand in pocket and make progressions in an NFL system.  Certainly shows potential, but is raw in this area.

Poise: Incredible leader.  Made promise of national title during junior year, then fulfilled it.  Handles pressure incredibly well.  Is at his bes tin big situations.  WANTS/NEEDS the ball in his hands when game is on the line.  Wills his team to wins, vocal leader.  Inspires team and seems to lift them.  Gets animated, but never out of control.

Ball Handling: Has a lot of work with ball fakes from college offense and has become very adept at selling the run.  Will have to show ability from under center, but definitely a strong point.

Timing: Needs work here.  After working in spread system in college, his timing will need to be refined in an NFL offense.  With improved footwork (like he showed at his pro day) this will get better.  Shows potential, but this is still his biggest weakness.  Has tendency to revert to throwing off of back foot and can lose intended velocity on passes.

Delivery: Fixed many of his mechanical problems, including eliminating slow, drawn-out loop in release.  No longer drops ball below his belt.  Is more side-armed now, and is definitely a work in progress.  Made great strides in short time, and didn’t seem to lose zip or accuracy because of changes.  Not a finished project, but getting there.  Think Philip Rivers.

Follow Through: Showed better at pro day.  Follows through on passes, and comes through with good pop.  Always been an okay area with him, but he’s starting to throw less off of back foot.

Avoiding the Rush: Excels here.  Ran a nice 2.71 40 and shows the elusiveness to avoid the rush.  Has enough agility to make defenders miss him and buy extra time.

Escape: Has great escapability.  Shows quickness to dodge defenders, and has enough awareness in the pocket to avoid them.  Shows good intrenal clock.  Moves well within the pocket but needs to stand in longer before taking off to run.

Scrambling: Very underrated open-field runner.  Is not a Michael Vick and won’t burn anyone with pure speed, but has nice vision and surprising quickness to pick up yards on busted plays.  Was a great runner in college and amassed 57 TDs on the ground.

Throwing on the Run: Very good passer on the run.  Did a lot of rolling out in college and has comfort there.  Shows good zip on roll-out passes and keeps balance well enough to remain accurate.  Is very mobile and comfortable moving around to make a throw.  Has great hip flexibility, and shows the torque to throw across his body from left arm.

Arm Strength: Extremely underrated aspect of his game.  Was deadly accurate and productive on passes of 15+ yards through the air.  Has the strength to fit the ball into tight windows down the field, and has enough zip to complete quicker routes.  Has been very strong throwing back across his body will all arm.  Very strong upper body and excellent hip torque when stepping into long throws.  Arm strength is not at Jamarcus Russell level, but it is good enough for any environment.

Zip: New motion has increased zip on passes and has improved tightness of spiral.  Shows good velocity on out routes.  Has a tendency to sometimes throw off of back foot causing ball to sail.  Made huge strides in this department during career.  Watch Sugar Bowl tape.  Has plenty of arm for zip.

Touch/Timing/Positioning: Has always shown nice touch on deep passes.  Shows excellent touch at times on short-intermediate routes.  Shows decent awareness on screens with timing and touch. Throws a decently catchable pass and never had issues with over-firing.

Efficiency

Short Out Route: Shows great zip and timing on short out route.  Will hit receiver in break and lead him toward sideline.  Ball does not sail often on this route.

Deep Out Route: Needs work here mostly because he was rarely asked to make this throw.  Possesses arm strength to accurately deliver this pass on consistent basis, but is unproven here.

Go Route: Great touch and accuracy on go route.  Has always been strong with this one.  Leads receiver away from defender and throws an over-shoulder loaf of bread.  Soft and easy to catch with enough room for receiver to maintain acceleration.

Post Route: Leads receiver over the middle and away from coverage.  Hits receiver in stride and puts enough zip on ball to beat safety coverage.  Shows enough high release to reach over the linebackers.

Corner Route: Can sometimes float ball on corner routes, but usually leads receiver enough to make up for it.  Will have to work on footwork and timing on this route to become more accurate and throw with more zip.

FINAL GRADE:  Top 5 Prospect

He’s a Christian so I love him…now will follow twenty people who think “He’s a Christian so I hate him.

Blah. Blah. Blah.

The final word about Tebow is that it doesn’t matter what any of us think. Certain scouts and GMs (and at least one owner) in the NFL is “enamored” with him.

He’s a first round prospect and every problem he has is coachable.

Ummm. No.

His delivery looks a little “better” now, but as soon as he get under pressure, muscle memory will revert, and he’ll throw another inaccurate pass.

The fact that you call him a Top 5 pick, along the lines of Suh is crazy man!

High completion percentage? I’d have a decent completion percentage if I had 5-10 shovel passes a game.

I just don’t see it anywhere.

Hunter, you were right. I was wrong. Thankfully I was wrong on Tebow. Go Broncos!
