Chicago Bears 2010 NFL Draft Grade

CHICAGO

ufoldschool3.75 Major Wright, S, Florida
Wright was the right call for this defense. They needed safety help in a bad way, and this could end up being a solid fit. Wright has taken a lot of heat for being a Taylor Mays type player, but he’s better in coverage than most safeties, and he has experience in a complex defensive system. He needs practice, but his mentality makes him a fit as the Bears’ safety. GRADE: B+

3ROUND GRADE: B

nw4.109 Corey Wootton, DE, Northwestern
I like this pick. Let Wootton, a highly cerebral player, learn from Julius Peppers, let a 6-07 kid realize his potential. Wootton took knocks for lack of plays, but he was very productive as a junior. GRADE: B+

kst5.141 Joshua Moore, CB, Kansas State
I heard a lot of Moore hype this offseason, but I don’t see it. He could be a decent dime, and a special teams ace, but there were bigger needs (WR, OG). GRADE: D

cmu6.181 Dan LeFevour, QB, CMU
Finally stopped the free-fall for LeFevour. He was widely regarded as the fifth-best passer in this league, but spread roots and passing on passing at the combine really tanked his stock. Will be a great understudy for Jay Cutler. GRADE: B+

wtanm7.218 J’Marcus Webb, OT, West Texas A&M
This is actually a pretty nice pickup in the seventh. I think this roun should be all about upside or maybe the kicking game if it’s a big need. Webb has immense potential, but is rawer than a raptor’s ass. GRADE: B

Best Pick: Corey Wootton
Worst Pick: Joshua Moore
Sleeper Pick: J’Marcus Webb

FINAL ANALYSIS
Once again the Bears seemed to skip the majority of the draft. Their presence just isn’t felt on draft day, and they’re always in a “Schucks, we’ll do what we can” situation. They didn’t have a bad draft, and getting Major Wright where they got him was the correct value. Wootton fell much farther than thought, and he becomes a very intriguing protege for Peppers. LeFevour is a guy who will become a Charlie Whitehurst, steady behind a star until getting his own gig in four or five years. It’s good depth.

But, even with the signing of a small school tackle with bright upside, the Bears ignored too much of the offensive line. I thought they needed more depth and competition inside, and they passed on notable guards again and again (Mitch Petrus, anyone?). And I really think some dangerous receivers were on the board early on. Webb could develop into a serious player down the road, but it’s dicey. And I don’t really like Moore. He’s an offseason riser.

Still, the Bears addressed their biggest need, safety, with their first pick, and they got good value for that one and the Wootton pick. Wright will be a true Bears-style defender over the top. Just think offensive line and receiver went largely unaddressed.
